In his Christian Dior Spring 2008 Couture Collection, John Galliano was inspired by Gustav Klimt. A famous Symbolist painter and a member of the Art Nouveau movement. Motives from Gustav Klimt 'Golden Phase' such as gilded swirls and bejeweled geometric patterns are apparent all through that collection.
Wunderkind's designer - Wolfgang Joop, found inspiration for his Winter 2009 collection in the Russian art movement called Suprematism, which is based on fundamental geometric forms.Kasimir Malevich started this movement in 1915 by presenting his painting: Black Square.
Mariano Fortuny was an Italian Fashion designer (born in Spain) who designed couture from 1906 to 1946. Fortuny constructed the Delphos, a pleated silk gown. Inspired by a tunic (Chiton) worn by Classical Greek sculpture of a charioteer,
"The Delphos was constructed from four to five width of silk that were sewn into a tubular shape and secured at the shoulder." (The Fashion Book, Phaidon)
In July 2007 Christian Dior fashion house celebrated it's 60th anniversary in the orangery of the Château de Versailles. The event was called "bal des artistes" (artists’ ball). The inspiration for that evening was Dior's favorite painters. Homage was given to Rembrandt, Renoir, Picasso, Velazquez, Michelangelo and many more.
